River View

Anchor Cottage is a waterfront cottage right on Newton Creek, Noss Mayo. As soon as you arrive and park in one of the two free car parking spaces – a real rarity in Noss Mayo – you will be mesmerised by the river I promise!

If you sleep in the master bedroom, The Coaster, you can fall asleep to the sounds of the tide coming in and out. In the morning you can throw open the balcony windows and let the view in. The sunlight reflects off the water throwing beautiful patterns on the ceiling. You will be swept up in it’s magic.

Grab one of the kayaks and get out on an early morning paddle downstream, you can head up the Yealm or even out to sea. Or you could always just moor up in Newton Ferrers and get your fresh bread from the community store

There are loads of lovely meandering river walks. A nice one is to head to The Swan Inn and if the tide is out you can cross The Voss to The Ship Inn and then follow the Yealm down to Celler Beach, you’ll find directions in the Anchor Cottage Guide Book.

You can head in the other direction and walk through Newton Ferrers and then out past the woodlands to join the South West Coast Path.

You could come here for a fortnight every year and never get bored. And yes the river is stunning when the sun is shining, but it is also pretty amazing when it’s a grey February day. Because the river is tidal it attracts all sorts of amazing aquatic wildlife, from crabs to ducks, to waders to pipefish, there is so much to see. Just watching the birds with the handy binoculars from the 1st floor balcony at Anchor Cottage is the perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Want to see a seal, or a shoal of herrings feeding? Book a trip with Dragonfly Adventures you can find them on TripAdvisor or Facebook. The price is for Jon and his boat, not per person, and he can take you on an unforgettable journey and he has so much wonderful information on The Yealm.

This post wouldn’t be complete without mentioning TheĀ  River Yealm Harbour Authority, they have everything you need to plan your time on The Yealm as well as the most up-to-date information on the summer ferry.
